Every year Searchmetrics does a SEO ranking factors study and releases a report, and this year is their largest to date. The report concludes that there is a measurable correlation between the quality of your website content and search engine rankings, and that ‘it is no longer good enough to concentrate on the number of links or keywords’ in order to improve your rankings in searches.

The study essentially states that high quality, relevant content with semantically comprehensive wording is the way to improve your search engine optimisation (SEO) rankings, but that the absolute primary focus for content is quality. It also stresses that a good internal linking structure is an important factor and probably the most underrated SEO measure. You can’t just stuff your content with keywords, or irrelevant content, so context matters, Google is focussing on semantics and context.

In terms of on page technical SEO, the keyword remains an important part of the overall concept for SEO. Site load speed is another important factor, which is one of the reasons we’re upgrading our servers to a modern hosting platform. Site architecture is key… and backlinks also remain important, both in terms of quantity as well as quality.

Social signals correlate slightly less with good rankings than last year. It may seem obvious but click through rates and time spent on a site are higher in better ranking sites. There seems to be special consideration for big brands, increasing the complexity of brand influence and quality.

In summary therefore, good quality, interesting and relevant content is the key to improving your rankings, so content may now truly be king… but don’t forget about the other important factors mentioned above!
