26th October 2015Case Study - The Rare Skills Gallery

Doug - Business Development Director

By DougBusiness Development Director

A case study discussing the project for the e-commerce website we recently launched for The Rare Skills Gallery

The Background
The Rare Skills Gallery showcases original paintings, illustrations and prints by local artist Andrew Redden. His fabulous work covers a broad range of styles and subjects and the gallery, based in the Corn Exchange in The Pantiles, is well worth a visit if you’re looking for for high quality, affordable art.

The Brief
The website was brand new, and the brief was based on the following:

  • The real key to the website was to enable each picture to be appreciated for the quality of its composition, technique and colour without too many other visual distractions
  • Ease of navigation and cleanliness of the site were also important – a cluttered looking website would not have fitted the rest of the brand
  • To ‘excite’ people when they entered the website. You get that feel when you walk into the gallery so we needed to replicate that on the website

The Project
The first step with the new website was for Alex (who was managing the project from our end) to go and visit the gallery so we could be sure that the look and feel of the website replicated that of the gallery.

We recommended CS-Cart as the platform to deliver the website on. This choice was designed to offer a feature rich e-commerce platform that can be scaled and evolved as the gallery grows with easy to maintain products and content as well as supporting multiple secure payment gateways including PayPal which was the final choice. This is a platform we have used to deliver e-commerce websites for other successful local businesses and We were also able to add a zoom feature to the site as showcased below:

We were delighted with the outcome, although as an agency sometimes you work with a client who makes your job much easier and in this case we did. The project was managed by Nick Holker who is one of the owners and has a strong advertising background. This was clear throughout the project as content and feedback were provided in a timely and constructive manner with the end result being a collaborative process. A client like this makes our job so much easier, so thanks again Nick and he did have the following kind words to say about working with us:

He started by talking about the team and the process...

“Having spent most of my career in the communications business and worked with many creative and digital design teams, I can honestly say that working with Studio44 on the Rare Skills Gallery website has been a breath of fresh air.

Doug Rubashow invested considerable time in understanding the brief and visited the gallery to get a feel for the style and image that we wanted to project.

They provided a clear time-line from the outset so that everybody knew what they needed to do by when. They work to a logical development framework which provides plenty of flexibility, but keeps the whole project on-track.

They gave us a dedicated Project Manager (Alex Cole) who has not only been technically and creatively excellent, but extremely patient in teaching someone for whom the back end of e-commerce systems is not the most familiar of territories.

Furthermore, Alex had direct experience of the on-line aspect of the Art Gallery business and was able to factor in useful insight from the earliest stages of design."

He then went on to discuss the project:

"Studio44 work in partnership with you - discussing new ideas and potential tweaks intelligently and coming up with the right solutions to achieve the desired effect. They’ll also tell you if something is not going to work.

As a result, we have a very beautiful and efficient e-commerce website which presents our collection of pictures to the best possible advantage.

It was built on time and to the agreed budget, but perhaps even more unusual, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Although this is clearly a highly-skilled and knowledgeable technology business, everyone I have met at Studio44 has been pleasantly human to deal with.

I’m really rather sad the website is finished!”

Thanks for the kind words Nick, given the quality of the work displayed we’re certain the gallery will be a huge success. Be sure to browse the collection of pictures on the website and if you can, head down to the gallery and see the fabulous collection in person!
